Sclerotherapy in New York City

If you struggle with spider veins or varicose veins, you know how uncomfortable they can make you feel, both physically and psychologically.

At The Medical Clinic in New York City, we understand the discomfort and self-consciousness that vein issues can cause. That’s why our team, under the direction of Dr. Nicolas Batty, a board-certified physician with experience in internal and aesthetic medicine, offers sclerotherapy services.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a special solution into affected veins. The solution causes the vein to collapse, which then forces blood to flow through healthier veins. The collapsed vein eventually fades away.

Sclerotherapy is typically performed to improve the appearance of the veins. However, the procedure can also alleviate symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning, and cramping at night

Sclerotherapy Results and Side Effects

It can take a month or more for the full results to become visible. Some veins may also need more than one sclerotherapy treatment.

Sclerotherapy generally has few serious complications. Side effects may include bruising, hives, small skin sores, and skin darkening. These symptoms are typically mild and short-lived.

A very rare complication, known as deep vein thrombosis, carries a risk of a blood clot traveling from the leg to the lungs and blocking a vital artery (pulmonary embolism). The chances of this happening are low, especially when an experienced provider like Dr. Batty performs the procedure.

Pre-Sclerotherapy Guidelines

Before the procedure, your provider will perform a physical exam, assessing your veins and checking for signs of blood vessel disease. They will also ask questions about your medical history and might schedule an ultrasound to examine the veins more closely.

Blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium can increase the risk of bleeding. If you take one or more of these drugs, your provider will let you know when to stop them before your treatment.

On the day of your procedure, refrain from shaving your legs or applying lotion to them. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

What to Expect During the Procedure

During your sclerotherapy procedure, you will lie on your back with your legs slightly raised. Your provider will clean the treatment area and use a small needle to slowly push the solution into the vein.

Some people experience a minor stinging or cramping sensation when the needle is inserted into the vein. Inform your provider if the pain is severe.

After removing the needle, your provider will apply pressure to the area and gently massage it to prevent blood from entering the vein and to help spread the solution. They might tape a pad onto the injection site to keep pressure on the area before moving on to the next vein.
