Tattoo Removal – What You Should Know

Tattoo removal has become one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed today. About 1 in 5 people with tattoos eventually consider having them removed, often for personal, professional, or cosmetic reasons. Modern technology now allows tattoos to be safely and effectively lightened or completely removed using advanced laser systems.

A tattoo is created when colored pigment is placed deep in the skin’s second layer (the dermis). Because this pigment is permanent, it cannot simply fade away or be exfoliated from the surface. Earlier methods—such as surgical removal or skin sanding (dermabrasion)—often caused scarring. Today, Q-switched (QS) lasers are the gold standard for tattoo removal. They work by sending very short, powerful pulses of light energy into the skin, breaking tattoo ink into tiny particles. These fragments are then naturally cleared by the body’s immune system over time.

The number of sessions needed varies by tattoo size, color, and age, but most people require 8–15 treatments spaced about 6 weeks apart. Black and dark blue inks respond best, while yellow and orange are harder to remove. Studies show that up to 75% of tattoos can be nearly or completely cleared after 10–15 sessions. Side effects are usually mild—temporary redness, swelling, or slight scabbing—and the risk of scarring is very low when done by trained professionals.

For those seeking safe and effective tattoo removal or overall skin rejuvenation, MCNYC MedSpa offers the Fotona StarWalker® laser — a cutting-edge system combining four wavelengths and 15 treatment modes to treat pigmentation, acne scars, and tattoos across all skin types. Its high-energy yet gentle technology delivers precise results with minimal downtime. The proprietary FracTAT® feature also makes it one of the most advanced tattoo removal lasers available.
